Lesson 7

Strategies for Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Est. Class Sessions: 3

Summarizing the Lesson

Share Game Strategies. After they have played the game, select students to discuss some of the strategies they used for a particular turn in the game.

  • What were the starting and ending numbers on the spinners?
  • Is there a different way to get from the start point to the end point while still following the “rules”?
  • How many hops did you make?
  • Does your path take the fewest hops possible? How do you know?
  • Show or tell how your number sentence relates to the hops on the number line.

Highlight students' use of addition (moving to the right on the number line) and subtraction (moving to the left on the number line) for each path.

Complete Assessment. Assign the Add and Subtract Decimals with Models and Strategies Assessment Masters for students to complete individually. Provide access to base-ten pieces, fraction circle pieces, and Hundredths Circle Wheels. Other models are printed on the pages.

Use the Add and Subtract Decimals with Models and Strategies Assessment Masters with the Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to represent numbers to the hundredths using circle pieces, grid models, base-ten pieces, number lines, and symbols [E1]; estimate decimal sums and differences [E9]; add and subtract decimals using models and strategies [E7]; know the problem [MPE1]; find a strategy [MPE2]; check for reasonableness [MPE3]; show work [MPE5]; and use labels [MPE6].

To provide targeted practice, make copies of the Number Line Pattern 1 Master and Number Line Pattern 2 Master. Students can independently use the addition and subtraction patterns to complete the number lines.

Students can also play Start, Hop, Stop to Hundredths for targeted practice. Provide additional copies of the Start, Hop, Stop to Hundredths Game Board Master.
