Demonstrate the activity by having you lead and the class follow. After students understand the activity, ask students to work with a partner to continue to practice their partitions of five.

D. Partition 5

Stand up and find a partner.

  1. Face your partner.
  2. Player 1 puts one arm straight up in the air.
  3. Once in the air, Player 1 uses his or her fingers to show a number between 0 and 5.
  4. Player 2 puts his or her arm down and displays the number needed to make 5. For example, Player 1 shows 2 fingers and Player 2 shows 3 fingers because 2 + 3 = 5.
  5. On the next turn, Player 2 leads.
