Lesson 2

Addition Facts I Know

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

Write 5 + 2 = ? and 2 + 5 = ? on a display.

  • Will the sum for these two problems be the same number or a different number? (It will be the same.)
  • How do you know? (Possible response: When you add two numbers it does not matter what order they are in; the answer will be the same.)
  • How does knowing the answer for 5 + 2 help you when you are adding 2 + 5? (Possible response: Since the order does not matter, if you know 5 + 2 = 7 then you know 2 + 5 = 7.)

Remind students that we call 5 + 2 and 2 + 5 turn-around facts. To continue to practice turn-around facts, suggest other number sentences from the addition facts in Groups A and B and ask students to identify the number sentence that represents the turn-around fact. Record these on a display for students.
