Look for and make use of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

This lesson reintroduces repeating patterns and consists of three parts. First, students line up in various "kid patterns" that are analyzed and identified by the rest of the class. Second, students identify patterns made with different colors of connecting links and extend the patterns. Third, students record link patterns, representing the patterns using colors and letters as shorthand.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying, describing, and extending repeating patterns in lines of objects [E3].
  • Identifying the pattern unit in a repeating pattern [E5].
  • Representing patterns using objects, pictures, number lines, words, and symbols [E6].
  • Choosing good tools and an efficient strategy for solving a problem [MPE2].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Link Chains. Make a six-link chain with a pattern unit of red, green, blue and place it in a paper bag. Make other link pattern chains for students to identify and extend and place them in a bag. Have several additional link chains with different patterns to demonstrate how to record the patterns.

Place Repeating Patterns in a Learning Center. Make multiple copies of Questions 1–3 on the Repeating Patterns page in the Student Activity Book and place them with an assortment of links in a learning center.

Prepare Ten Frames, Number Lines, and 100 Charts. Make copies of the Ten Frames and Number Line Master and the 100 Chart Master back-to-back on heavy card stock for each student. Provide students with one set to use in class and another to use at home. Laminating makes these tools more durable.
