Summarizing the Lesson

Prepare students to play Guess My Pattern by showing them a chain of links or connecting cubes organized in a pattern, such as ABBCABBC. Ask students to identify the pattern, represent it with symbols, and extend the pattern.

  • I made a pattern with links. Can you tell me what the pattern is? (red, blue, blue, green, red, blue, blue, green)
  • How would you use alphabet shorthand to show this pattern? (ABBCABBC)
  • What is the pattern unit? (ABBC)
  • What do you think comes next? [Remind students that knowing the pattern unit will help them know how to extend the pattern.]
  • Make a different chain with the same pattern.

Organize students into pairs and distribute links or connecting cubes. One student will create a pattern and the other will identify the pattern, represent it with symbols, and extend it. Group members can challenge one another to make another pattern with the same sequence of symbols.
