Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students practice representing and extending patterns. After working in a whole-class setting, students work in groups to translate patterns to alphabet shorthand (AB symbols). Students then compare patterns having the same pattern unit when represented by alphabet shorthand.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying, describing, and extending repeating patterns with lines of objects [E3].
  • Identifying the pattern unit in a repeating pattern [E5].
  • Representing patterns using objects, pictures, words, and symbols [E6].

Materials Preparation

Prepare a Pattern with a Chain of Links. Make a chain with links that follows an alphabet shorthand pattern. For example, a red, blue, green pattern would be an ABC pattern. Place the chain in a small paper bag.

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. Place links or connecting cubes in a learning center for students to play Guess My Pattern, as described in Summarizing the Lesson, to provide targeted practice with representing, identifying, extending, and recording repeating patterns.
