Growing Patterns
Est. Class Sessions: 1–2Literature Connection
Read the nursery rhyme "One Two, Buckle My Shoe." Have the class identify the pattern and tell whether it is a repeating or a growing pattern. Students can extend the pattern by coming up with verses for 21, 22, and for 23, 24.
One, two,
Buckle my shoe;
Three, four,
Shut the door;
Five, six,
Pick up sticks;
Seven, eight,
Lay them straight;
Nine, ten,
A good fat hen;
Eleven, twelve,
Who will delve;
Thirteen, fourteen,
Maids a-courting;
Fifteen, sixteen,
Maids a-kissing;
Seventeen, eighteen,
Maids a-waiting;
Nineteen, twenty,
My stomach's empty.
