TIMS Task

This DPP item provides practice with the multiplication facts for the 3s by asking students to explain 3 × 7.

Possible solutions include skip counting, drawing pictures of 3 groups of 7 things, drawing a 3 × 7 array.

A student could also break 7 into 3 + 4; 3 × 3 = 9; 3 × 4 = 12; 9 + 12 = 21.

F. Mr. and Mrs. Smart

Mr. Smart says that 3 × 7 = 23, and Mrs. Smart cannot convince him he's wrong. Write a letter to Mr. Smart explaining what 3 × 7 equals and why. You may use drawings in your letter.
