TIMS Task

  1. (1, 4) (2,7) (3,8) (4,11) (5, 121/2)
  2. At hour 2, she had walked 7 miles, which is slightly more than half of 13 miles.
  3. 3 miles
  4. During the first hour, 4 miles
  5. Estimates will vary. At 5 hours, she had 1/2 mile to go. Since she was capable of walking 4 miles per hour, she could have finished in another 7 or 8 minutes. On the other hand, it took her an hour to walk 1 mile between hour 2 and hour 3, and she would be very tired at this point. Accept any answer between 7 minutes and 1 hour.
  6. 26 miles

H. Half Marathon

Keenya walked in the Lincoln Half Marathon, which is 13 miles long. She recorded her time every hour. Then, she graphed the ordered pairs to make this graph.

  1. List the ordered pairs that Keenya graphed.
  2. At what hour had Keenya walked about half the distance?
  3. Between hour three and hour four, how many miles did Keenya walk?
  4. During which hour did Keenya walk the farthest? How far did she walk during that hour?
  5. Estimate how long it took Keenya to finish the rest of the 13 miles. Explain why you think so.
  6. If 13 miles is a half marathon, how long is a whole marathon?
