Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.A
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (4.NBT.A.2)
4.NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.(4.NBT.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students improve their understanding of subtraction concepts and their subtraction skills so that they can solve problems efficiently and accurately. Students use base-ten pieces to review paper-and-pencil procedures and develop mental math strategies to subtract. These skills allow students to choose flexibly between using paper and pencil or mental math based on the numbers in the problems and their real-world contexts.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing and solving subtraction problems using base-ten pieces and number lines [E3].
  • Subtracting multidigit numbers using paper-and-pencil methods (expanded form and compact) [E7].
  • Checking subtraction with addition [E7].
  • Choosing from among mental math and paper-and-pencil methods to subtract whole numbers [E9].
  • Using mental math strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems [E4].
