TIMS Bit

These examples should encourage students to use counting up or other mental strategies rather than regrouping on paper. For example, in Question 1, a student might count up 3 from 3997 to 4000. Then, count up 3 more to 4003. Therefore, the answer is 6. In Question 5, a student might recall the answer for Question 4 (a similar problem) and take away one more number.

  1. 6
  2. 12
  3. 201
  4. 3500
  5. 3499
  6. 3501
  1. Strategies will vary. See note above.
