TIMS Bit

Encourage students to use the Addition Strategies Menu and Subtraction Strategies Menu in the Student Guide Reference section. These menus were developed in Grades 2, 3, and 4.

    1. 432
    2. 274
    3. 642
    4. 1659
  1. Answers will vary. Possible response: Round 1037 to 1000, and 763 to 750, the answer is 250. The answer 274 is reasonable.
  2. Answers will vary. Possible response: for 356 + 76, add 350 + 75 = 425, then add on 7 to get 432. To solve 4656 − 2997, add 3 to 2997. 4656 − 3000 = 1656. Then, add the 3 back on to 1656 to get 1659.

A. Addition and Subtraction Practice

Solve each problem. Estimate to check whether your answer is reasonable. Use the Addition Strategies Menu and Subtraction Strategies Menu in the Student Guide Reference section.

    1. 356 + 76 =
    2. 1037 − 763 =
    3. 484 + 158 =
    4. 4656 − 2997 =
  1. Explain your estimate for Question 1B.
  2. Choose a problem to solve using mental math or a few quick notes. Explain your strategy.
