TIMS Challenge

DPP item B can be used as a Problem of the Week.

  1. Some students may get only one answer for the problem. Others may be able to make a table and exhaust the possibilities. One possible answer is: 5 trikes (5 × 3 = 15 wheels) and 10 bikes (10 × 2 = 20 wheels).
  2. If there is only one bike, then 35 wheels − 2 wheels = 33 wheels left. 33 wheels ÷ 3 wheels each = 11 trikes.
  3. If there is only one trike, then 35 wheels − 3 wheels = 32 wheels left. 32 wheels ÷ 2 wheels each = 16 bikes.
  4. 5 trikes and 10 bikes (5 × 3 + 10 × 2 = 35 wheels)
  5. 7 trikes and 7 bikes (7 × 3 + 7 × 2 = 35 wheels)

B. Bikes and Trikes

There are some bicycles and some tricycles in the TIMS warehouse. The total number of wheels is 35.

  1. How many bikes and how many trikes might be in the TIMS warehouse? (Give several answers to this problem.)
  2. What is the fewest number of bikes that can be in the warehouse? Then how many trikes will there be?
  3. What is the fewest number of trikes that can be in the warehouse? Then how many bikes will there be?
  4. If the warehouse has a total of 15 bikes and trikes altogether, how many of each are in the warehouse?
  5. If the number of bikes and trikes is the same, how many of each are in the warehouse?
