TIMS Task

  1. 25
  2. $4.05
  3. 800
  4. 10
  5. 15
  6. 31
  7. 4
  8. 6
  9. 5/24
  1. Possible response: I know that 18 + 6 = 24, so I had to find out what to add to 1/8 to equal 1/3. I changed 1/8 to 3/24. Since 8/24 = 1/3, I knew I had to add 5/24 to 3/24.

B. Think about Numbers

Use what you know about numbers to find the value of n that will make each number sentence true.

  1. 350 + 400 + 675 = 1400 + n
  2. $0.95 + n = $5.00
  3. 9 × n + 1 = 7200 + 1
  4. 2 × 25 × 2 = 90 + n
  5. 2 × n + 100 = 40 + 30 + 60
  6. 40 × 8 = 8 × (9 + n)
  7. 4 × 4 × n + 4 = 60 + (10 – 2)
  8. 1/2 × 8 + 8 = n + 6
  9. 1/3 × 24 = (1/8 + n) × (18 + 6)
  10. Show or tell how you solved Question 9.
