TIMS Task

Have fraction circle pieces readily available.

  1. 92/3
  2. 62/3
  3. 6
  4. 41/2
  5. 111/3
  6. 81/2
  7. 81/2
  8. 81/4
  9. 111/8
  10. 101/2
  11. 143/4
  1. Possible response: 8 is a common denominator for 1/4, 6/8, and 1/2, so I rewrote the problem with common denominators: 22/8 + 46/8 + 34/8. Then I added the whole numbers 2 + 4 + 3 = 9 and the fractions 2/8 + 6/8 + 4/8 = 12/8 or 11/2. Finally I added 9 + 11/2 = 101/2.

H. Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Rewrite each of the following as mixed numbers. Write all fractions in simplest terms.

  1. 810/6
  2. 80/12
  3. 39/3
  4. 27/6
  5. 34/3
  6. 57/2
  7. 42/3 + 35/6 =
  8. 51/2 + 23/4 =
  9. 61/4 + 47/8 =
  1. 21/4 + 46/8 + 31/2 =
  2. 65/6 + 21/3 + 57/12
  1. Show or tell how you solved Question 10.
