Ask students to describe their strategies.

  • What do you notice about the number sentences in Questions A and B? (They are the same number sentences, just different parts are missing and the numbers are in a different order.)
  • What do you notice about the number sentences in Questions C and D? (They are the same number sentences, just different parts are missing.)
  • How can you use your answers in Questions C and D to answer Question E? (Possible response: 4 is more than three so that means the other part has to be one less than 5. So, 4 + 4 = 8.)
  1. 2
  2. 6
  3. 3
  4. 5
  5. 4
