TIMS Task

Use this DPP item to practice the multiplication facts for the 3s and 9s by skip counting on the calculator.

Students work in groups of two for this activity. To skip count by 3s on a calculator with a constant function, students press:

, etc.

Did students count three times as fast by 9s as by 3s? Since 100 is not a multiple of 3 or 9, you cannot land on 100 when skip counting by 3 or 9.

B. Calculator Counting

  1. Use a calculator to count by 3s to 100. Work with a partner. One partner will count, saying the numbers quietly. The other partner will time how long the counting takes. Take turns. How long did it take? Can you land on 100?

  2. Use the data from Question 1 to predict how long it would take to count by 9s to 100. Then, use a calculator to count by 9s to 100. How long did it take? Can you land on 100?
