Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.A
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (4.NBT.A.1)
4.NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. (4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students review multiplication of numbers that are multiples of ten and explore the role of place value and the turn-around rule (commutative property) in finding these products.

Content in this Lesson

  • Multiplying numbers that are multiples of ten [E2].
  • Using the commutative property to solve multiplication problems [E3].

Small Multiplication Tables. If you have not done so already, make copies of the Small Multiplication Tables Master and cut out the tables. Give each student a table to tape to his or her desk and one to take home. Students can refer to the tables as they work on this and future activities. In this way, students practice using the facts in many problem-solving situations and develop confidence that they have the tools they need to find solutions.
