Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.A
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (4.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.3)
4.NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. (4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5)
4.OA.A
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. (4.OA.A.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students construct a menu of strategies and methods for solving multiplication problems involving larger numbers. This menu includes paper-and-pencil methods as well as mental math strategies. Students use this menu to practice these strategies and to develop connections between these strategies and methods.

Content in this Lesson

  • Multiplying numbers that are multiples of ten [E2].
  • Multiplying multidigit numbers by one-digit numbers using mental math strategies and paper-and-pencil methods (expanded form, all-partials, compact) [E7].
  • Using place value concepts and mathematical properties in operations with multidigit numbers [E3].
  • Showing connections between models and strategies for multiplication [E4].
  • Estimating products [E6].
