Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.A
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (4.NBT.A.3)
4.NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. (4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5)
4.OA.A
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. (4.OA.A.3)
4.OA.B
Gain familiarity with factors and multiples. (4.OA.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students practice solving multiplication problems involving multidigit numbers. This Workshop lesson allows students to choose from several problem sets and a game to review multiplication concepts and practice multiplication methods.

Content in this Lesson

  • Using place value concepts and the distributive property to multiply [E3].
  • Showing connections between models and strategies for multiplication [E4].
  • Estimating products [E6].
  • Multiplying multidigit numbers by 1-digit numbers using mental math strategies and paper-and-pencil methods (e.g., expanded form, all-partials, compact) [E7].
  • Choosing appropriately from among estimation, mental math strategies, and paper-and-pencil methods to multiply whole numbers [E8].
  • Choosing an appropriate strategy to solve problems in real-world situations [E8].

Materials Preparation

Digit Cards. If students did not prepare and save a set of Digit Cards 0–9 previously, provide them with double-sided copies of the Digit Cards 0–9 Master to cut apart and store in an envelope. You will also need to prepare a display set of cards to demonstrate the game. You may use the Master or a deck of playing cards. If using a deck of playing cards, the ace can stand for 1 and a face or joker card can stand for zero.
