Lesson 5

Hour Walk

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Homework and Practice

  • Ask students to estimate the number of steps an older or younger family member would take in one hour and ask them to explain how they made their estimates.
  • Assign Home Practice Parts 3, 4, and 5. Part 3 provides practice using the divisibility rules. Part 4 uses a number line to help students round numbers. Part 5 is a series of word problems designed to practice estimation, mental math strategies, and paper-and-pencil methods to multiply whole numbers.

Use Home Practice Part 3 to assess students' abilities to use divisibility rules to identify factors and multiples [E1].

Use Home Practice Part 5 to assess students' abilities to estimate products [E6] and to choose appropriately from among estimation, mental math strategies, and paper-and-pencil methods to multiply whole numbers [E8].

Targeted practice for estimating products [E6] is in the Workshop in Lesson 8.

  • Assign DPP items O–P. Use Task P to review the connection between multiples of ten, base-ten shorthand, and base-ten pieces.

Math Facts. Bit O provides practice with the multiplication facts for the 2s and 3s using numbers ending in zero.
