TIMS Bit

Answers will vary. To begin, you can ask the class to skip count in unison. This task provides an opportunity for students to practice starting, stopping, and resetting stopwatches. Students will use stopwatches in Lesson 3. Students can complete this item using a clock with a second hand or stopwatch.

It may help students to write down the numbers, although it may slow them down.

Students should realize that they will not be able to get as far counting by sixths.

E. Fraction Skip Counting

Work with a partner on these problems. Take turns timing each other. Use a stopwatch or a clock with a second hand.

  1. Skip count by halves for 30 seconds. Write down how far you were able to count.
    Start like this: 1/2, 1, 11/2, 2, 21/2, 3, etc.
  2. Skip count by thirds for 30 seconds. Write down how far you were able to count.
    Start like this: 1/3, 2/3, 1, 11/3, etc.
  3. Estimate how far you think you can count by sixths in 30 seconds. Try it. How close was your estimate?
