The ongoing project, Hundreds of Coins, was introduced in Unit 1. Activities and possible prompts through Day 25 and Day 100 are included in Unit 1 Lesson 1. Encourage students to skip count using the number line to find the total amount in four jars. Alternatively, students can use a doubling strategy to find out how much is in 2 jars, then in 4 jars. Have coin jars from Unit 1 Lesson 1 and number lines readily available.

Answers will vary. Discuss the fact that if it is not a day to make trades, the value of the nickels in the Nickel jar will not be the total of all the coins when pennies are included. The same will be true for the dimes and quarters.

M. Coin Jar

  1. How many pennies are in each jar?
  2. Do all the jars have the same number of coins?
  3. Do all the jars have the same amount of money?
    How do you know?
  4. Can we make trades today? Why or why not?
  5. What should we write in the next space on the charts?
