Reason with shapes and their attributes. (2.G.A.1, 2.G.A.2, 2.G.A.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students review how to choose an appropriate unit of measure, use it, and report area measurement using both a number and a unit. They find the areas of shapes, including those containing half and fourth square centimeters, on a centimeter grid using counting, repeated addition, and reasoning strategies.

Content in this Lesson

  • Finding the area of a shape on a grid using counting, repeated addition, and reasoning strategies [E8].
  • Composing and decomposing shapes into smaller shapes [E6].
  • Adding half and fourth square centimeters to find area.
  • Using words and models to describe equal shares (e.g., half, half of) [E4].
  • Using numbers, words, and square units to report area measurements [MPE6].
  • Finding area a second way to check the reasonableness of an answer [MPE3].
