Lesson 9

Composing and Decomposing Shapes

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

Direct students to the Ship Shape page in the Student Activity Book. Ask students to describe the shape in Question 1 to a partner. Tell students to talk about the angles and sides that they see in the shape. Then assign the problems on the Ship Shape page for students to complete individually. Each student will need a set of pattern blocks. Students will use the pattern blocks to compose the shape on the page and circle the descriptions of the attributes present in the shape.

Use the Ship Shape pages with the Feedback Box in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to compose and decompose shapes into smaller shapes [E6]; describe 2-dimensional shapes based on their attributes [E1]; and choose and use good tools to solve a problem [MPE2].

To provide targeted practice, place copies of the Fill in the Shapes pages from the Student Activity Book along with sets of pattern blocks in a learning center. Allow students more time to use the pattern blocks to compose the shapes. Encourage them to find two different ways to compose each shape.
