Mathematical Standards

2.G.A
Reason with shapes and their attributes. (2.G.A.1)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students use descriptors such as the number of sides, right angles, and parallel sides to sort the shapes they explored in Lesson 9. Students draw a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, septagon, and octagon.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying 2-dimensional shapes based on their attributes [E1].
  • Sorting shapes based on their number of sides, right angles, and parallel sides [E1].
  • Drawing a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, septagon, and octagon [E1].

orange square, purple triangle, tan rhombus)

Materials Preparation

Prepare 5 Display Sets of Shape Cards. Make five copies of the Fill in the Shapes pages in the Student Activity Book from Lesson 9. Cut out the cards so that you have five display sets of shape cards.

Create Sorting Charts. Make five large charts as shown in Figures 1–5 on chart paper.
