To summarize the lesson, ask students to first discuss
each question with a partner and then to share
their definition with the class:
- What is one-fourth? (One-fourth is one of
four equal parts. If you share something fairly
among four people, each person will have
a fourth.)
- What is one-third? (One-third is one of
three equal parts. If you share something fairly
among three people, each person will have
a third.)
- What is one-half? (One-half is one of two equal
parts. If you share something fairly between
two people, each person will have a half.)
Assign the Fourths, Thirds, and Halves pages in the
Student Activity Book for students to complete individually.
Use the Fourths, Thirds, and Halves pages and the Feedback
Box in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities
to use words and models to describe equal shares [E4];
recognize that equal shares of the same whole do not have to
be the same shape [E5]; recognize that the same fractional
parts of different-size unit wholes are not equal [E7]; check
for reasonableness [MPE3]; and show work [MPE5].
