Lesson 10

Sorting Shapes

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Assign the All about Shapes pages in the Student Activity Book for students to complete individually. Students will identify, describe, draw, and sort 2-dimensional shapes based on their attributes such as right angles, number of sides, number of angles, and number of parallel sides. Each student will need a ruler.

Use the All about Shapes pages with the Feedback Box in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to identify, describe, sort, and draw 2-dimensional shapes based on their attributes [E1].

To provide targeted practice, place copies of the My Shape Riddles Assessment Master in a center. Students can use these and their own sets of shape cards from the Fill in the Shapes pages in the Student Activity Book to write riddles that include shape descriptors. They can exchange riddles with a partner.

Upon completion, display the Shape Riddles section of the All about Shapes pages and select a couple of the riddles to discuss. Read a riddle aloud and then have students explain how they identified the shape.

  • How do you know that this shape solves the riddle?
  • Is there another solution? Did anyone solve the riddle with a different shape?
  • Show the [parallel sides, right angles] in this shape.
  • Show how to count the [angles, sides] in this shape.
  • Why doesn't this shape work?
  • Can you draw another shape that solves this riddle?
