Look for and make use of structure.

Students informally experience adding one-half and one-fourth as they complete fraction puzzles where different representations of the two fractions are shown. They piece together both triangular and rectangular halves and discover that differently shaped halves still cover the same area.

Content in this Lesson

  • Recognizing that equal shares of the same whole do not have to be the same shape but they must have equal areas [E5].
  • Exploring addition of fractions.
  • Using words and models to describe equal shares (e.g., half, half of, one-fourth) [E4].
  • Finding a strategy to solve puzzles [MPE2].
  • Showing or telling how puzzles were solved [MPE5].
