TIMS Task

  1. Possible response: About 30,000,000 square miles. Round both numbers to the nearest million. 60,000,000 − 30,000,000 = 30,000,000 square miles.
  2. Less. Round both numbers to the nearest 100,000 square miles. 28,000,000 + 33,000,000 = 61,000,000 square miles.

Ask students to find the oceans on a globe to help them compare the sizes.

R. Oceans

  1. The Pacific Ocean covers about 64,186,300 square miles. The Atlantic Ocean covers about 33,420,000 square miles. About how many more square miles does the Pacific Ocean cover than the Atlantic?
  2. The Indian Ocean covers about 28,350,000 square miles. Do the Atlantic and Indian Oceans combined cover more or less area than the Pacific Ocean?
