Have students share strategies. Ask if they could use their answer to Question 1 to help with the answer to Question 2.

  1. 8 marbles; 4 + 4 = 8
  2. 9 marbles; 5 + 4 = 9 or 4 + 4 + 1 = 9
  3. 6 marbles; 12 = 6 + 6

R. Fair Shares

Draw pictures or use cubes to help you solve the problems.

  1. May and Fay have some marbles. They share them so they each have 4. How many marbles do May and Fay have altogether? Write a number sentence.
  2. May found another marble, so now she has 5 and Fay has 4. How many do they have altogether? Write a number sentence.
  3. Nell and Dell have 12 marbles and they share them fairly. How many does each have now? Write a number sentence.
