Have a collection of coins and number lines readily available. Have students share their solution strategies.

  1. one penny, one dime, one quarter
  2. three nickels, one penny
    Possible response: I know because to get 16¢, you have to have a penny. Then you need 3 more coins for 15¢. That can only be 3 nickels.

B. Money Riddles

  1. I have three coins in my hand. The total amount of money is 36 cents. What coins am I holding?
  2. I have 4 coins in my hand. The total amount of money is 16 cents. What coins am I holding? Show or tell how you know.
