Lesson 4

Floor Tiler

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Homework and Practice

  • Students can take home the Floor Tiler pages in the Student Guide, the Spinners 1–4 and 1–10 and Floor Tiler Grid Paper in the Student Activity Book, and a multiplication table to play the game at home. They can use pencil-and-paper clip spinners and can record the number of minutes they play with family members or friends.
  • Assign DPP items M–N. Bit M involves money and giving change.
  • For Challenge N, which can be used as a Problem of the Week, students make estimates about the number of books and number of pages in the classroom and library.

Math Facts. Students practice the multiplication facts as they play Floor Tiler.

Use this lesson to reinforce the terms product and factor. As students play the game and as you discuss strategies, ask:

  • What is the product of the two numbers that you spun? What number do you get when you multiply them together?
  • What are other factors for that number? Think of other numbers you can multiply together and get the same product.
  • What rectangles can you draw that use those pairs of factors?
