Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. (4.NBT.B.5)
4.OA.B
Gain familiarity with factors and multiples. (4.OA.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students play a game that provides extended practice with multiplication facts. They explore strategies for designing boards for the game by finding factors of numbers and identifying prime numbers. Students communicate their reasoning as they solve these problems.

Content in this Lesson

  • Determining whether one number is a multiple of another number [E2].
  • Determining whether one number is a factor of another number [E3].
  • Identifying prime numbers [E4].
  • Identifying square numbers [E5].

Spinners. If you do not have clear plastic spinners to place over the Spinners 1–4 and 1–10 page, students can use paper clips and pencils. Straighten out one end of the paper clip, and place a pencil through the curved end. Then, put the point of the pencil on the center of the spinner, and spin the paper clip around the pencil, using the straightened end as the pointer.

Student Work Samples. Choose student work samples for small groups to evaluate and provide feedback on Check-In: Questions 2–3 on the Design Your Own Boards page from the Student Activity Book. Samples are provided on the John's Work and Tanya's Work Masters. If you choose samples from your class, ask the students' permission and prepare to provide one copy of student work to each group of students.
