Mathematical Standards

4.NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. (4.NBT.B.5)
4.OA.A
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. (4.OA.A.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

This lesson introduces the yearlong review of the multiplication facts and launches the systematic strategies-based approach to gaining fluency with the division facts. Students learn the connection between multiplication and division through the use of fact families. They solve word problems to develop and enhance their understanding of the division operation. Flash cards are used to assess their fluency with multiplication facts for the fives, tens, and square numbers.

Content in this Lesson

  • Self-assessing fluency with the multiplication facts for the 5s, 10s, and square numbers [E10].
  • Using known multiplication facts to learn related division facts [E11].
  • Using turn-around facts to solve multiplication problems [E8].
  • Multiplying by 0 and 1 [E7].
  • Writing the related number sentences in a fact family [E11].
