Part 3: Exponents

Use Exponents as Shortcuts. When multiplication number sentences have repeated factors, such as 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 = 24, exponents can be used as a shortcut for writing the factors. Read with the class Mrs. Dewey's problem about apples in the Exponents section in the Student Guide.

Mrs. Dewey's problem provides a way to introduce exponents. The solution to the problem is shown so that students can focus on writing repeated multiplication with exponents. However, you may wish to have your students solve the problem if they are ready to do so. The problem can also be extended to include higher powers of two by asking, “How many apples would you have on Thursday, on Saturday, on Sunday?”

Have students solve the problems in Questions 6–9 with a partner. These questions allow students to become familiar with exponential notation, recognize its meaning, and find products involving exponents.
