Developing the Lesson

Part 5. Compare Fractions

Have students work with partners to complete Questions 9–14 that ask students to compare fractions. As they work, encourage them to make their comparisons by showing the fractions with the strips and comparing the size of the fractions.

In Questions 13 and 14, students are also asked to compare and order fractions that have the same numerator. Encourage students to use their fraction strips to describe the pattern they see in the symbolic representation: when the numerators are the same, the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction.

Ask students to complete Questions 15–17. Then discuss some of the number sentences given in Question 15.

  • Use your fraction strips to show how you know one of Question 15's number sentences is true.
  • Which false number sentence did you correct?
  • Why was it false? Show how you made it true.

Question 17 changes the idea of the unit whole as in the Kid Fraction activity near the beginning of the lesson. With fraction strips, the whole is one item. In this problem, the unit whole is a set of discrete or separate items—the group of 8 cookies.
