Mathematical Standards

4.NF.B
Build fractions from unit fractions. (4.NF.B.3, 4.NF.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.

Students use their fraction strips from Lessons 1 and 2 to add, subtract, and multiply fractions with like denominators. Students look for patterns in number sentences to solve a problem that cannot be represented with the fraction strips.

Content in this Lesson

  • Writing number sentences from area models of fractions [E6].
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators using fraction strips [E10].
  • Multiplying fractions by a whole number [E11].
  • Naming and representing fractions greater than one [E5].

Materials Preparation

Student Display Space. Prepare a sheet of chart paper or a large section of the board to record the addition and subtraction number sentences students use to solve the problems in this lesson. The space should be visible by all students and be large enough to record about fifteen number sentences.

E5.
Name and represent fractions greater than one as mixed numbers and improper fractions using models (fraction strips, circle pieces, number lines).
E6.
Write number sentences from area models of fractions
(e.g., 1/2 = 3/6, 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3, 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1/3 × 3).
E11.
Multiply fractions by a whole number
(e.g., 1/3 × 3 = 1, 2/3 × 6 = 1/3 × 6 × 2).
