4.NF.B
Build fractions from unit fractions. (4.NF.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

This is the first of two lessons in this unit on comparing fractions. In this lesson, students organize their fraction strips in a chart and then use the chart to compare and order fractions according to size. Students also use the fraction strips to compare fractions to the one-half benchmark.

Content in this Lesson

  • Finding fractions equivalent to 1/2 using fraction strips [E8].
  • Comparing fractions using fraction strips and the one-half benchmark [E9].
  • Comparing fractions with the same numerator or same denominator [E9].
  • Representing fraction comparisons with symbols (e.g., <, >, = ) [E7].
