Fraction Strips

Summarizing the Lesson

Lead a variation of the Show Me activity. This time you do the showing and the students identify the fraction. Use the fraction strips you prepared before class to represent various fractions. Ask students to say the name of the fractions.

  • What is the name of this fraction?
  • Show me a fraction that is larger than this fraction. What is its name?
  • Show me a fraction that is smaller than this fraction. What is its name?
  • Show me a fraction that is equivalent to this fraction. (Note: not all fractions have equivalent fractions that can be shown with the strips.)
  • Write a number sentence that describes this fraction.

After a few examples, ask volunteers to lead the activity.

When the lesson is over, ask students to store their fraction strips in an envelope for use in upcoming lessons. They will add more strips to their collection in Lesson 2.
