Lesson 7

Workshop: Many Ways to Show a Fraction

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

  • How many different ways can you show 5/6?

Ask students to work in groups to find as many ways as they can to represent 5/6. Then ask groups to share their representations as a class display. Possible representations include: numbers, words, circle pieces, fraction strips, number lines, and rectangular arrays.

  • How does your drawing show 5/6?
  • How does your representation show a denominator of 6?
  • Show me the unit whole in your representation.
  • How many parts are there in all?
  • Are the parts equal?
  • How does your representation show a numerator of 5?

Ask groups to find representations in round robin style, with each child in turn showing a different representation of the fractions.
