Lesson 12

Fraction Puzzles

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

When students have completed their paragraphs, review samples of student work with the class. Use samples on the Jerome's Work, Grace's Work, or Ana's Work Masters or choose appropriate work from your class. Point out to students that they should be able to follow the steps in the written paragraphs to solve the problem the same way the writers of the paragraph did.

Assign one sample of student work to each group of students. Assign them so that each work sample is evaluated by at least two groups. Then, ask groups to fill out the Feedback Box at the bottom of their assigned work sample.

Sample completed Feedback Boxes are shown in Figures 6, 7, and 8.

  • Is the paragraph written well enough so that you know how the student who wrote the paragraph solved the problem? If so, use overhead fraction circle pieces to demonstrate the strategy and the solution. If not, tell what else you need to know to be able to follow the solution.
  • Explain what you said about the student's work in the Math Practices Feedback Box.

Student groups that reviewed the same student work sample discuss any discrepancies between the reviews.

Peer or Self-Assessment. Ask students to review a partner's paragraph or ask students to review their own work using the Feedback Box on the front of their completed Puzzle Problem page. Ask students to revise their work using a different color pen based on the discussion of the Expectations or peer review.
