Use the full set of fraction strips to play a variation of Show Me. Show students several fractions made with your strips.
For each fraction shown, ask:
- What is the name of this fraction?
- Show me a fraction that is larger than this fraction. What is its name?
- Show me a fraction that is smaller than this fraction. What is its name?
- Show me a fraction that is equivalent to this fraction.
- Show a fraction with your strips that is between 1 and 2. What are two names for this fraction? (Students can show any improper fraction or mixed number.)
Assign Check-In: Questions 14–17. When the lesson is over, ask students to store their fraction strips in envelopes for use in upcoming lessons.
Use Check-In: Questions 14–17 in the Student Guide to document progress on the Expectations below:
- Use words and numbers to name fractions [E2].
- Name and represent fractions greater than one as mixed numbers and improper fractions using fraction strips [E5].
- Write number sentences from area models of fractions (e.g., 1/2 = 3/6, 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3, 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1/3 × 3) [E6].
- Find equivalent fractions using fraction strips [E8].
Targeted practice for E2 and E5 is in Lesson 7 and for E5 and E8 in Lesson 10.
