Lesson 10

Multiplying Fractions by a Whole

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Developing the Lesson

Part 2. Multiply on Number Lines

Display and refer students to Questions 5–6 in the Multiplication Hops section in the Student Guide. Ask students to read Maya's and John's strategies using the number lines. Students should notice that both Maya and John landed on one. Ask student pairs to use number lines to answer Question 6. Ask students to share their responses to be sure they understand how to use the number lines to compare the number sentences involving fractions.

Students may need help drawing number lines for Question 6. To help students draw a number line marked in fifths, simply have them draw 5 tick marks evenly spaced and label the fifth tick mark one whole, or 5/5. Continue this pattern to 10/5, or two wholes, so the number line is long enough for the problem.

Assign the Multiply on Number Lines pages in the Student Activity Book.

Assign Questions 1–3 of the Homework section in the Student Guide after Part 2.
