Lesson 9

Comparing Fractions Using 1/2

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Homework and Practice

  • Assign the Homework section in the Student Guide. Assign Questions 1–3 after Part 1 and Questions 4–5 after Part 2.
  • Ask students to play Fraction Order from the Student Activity Book at home with a family member. Students will need to take home a prepared set of fraction cards, game board, and rules.
  • Assign Home Practice Parts 5 and 6. Parts 5 and 6 provide practice with naming and representing fractions using rectangle area models and fraction strips. Students will need the Writing Numbers in Words page in the Student Guide Reference section.

Use Home Practice Part 6 to assess students' abilities to represent and name fractions and mixed numbers [E1, E5] and to make connections among representations of fractions [E7].

The Workshop in Lesson 7 provides targeted practice with these expectations.

  • Assign DPP items CC–FF. In Bit CC, students make connections among representations of fractions. In Challenge DD, students solve fraction puzzles while identifying the unit whole when given a fractional part of a whole. Bit EE and Task FF provide practice with comparing and sorting fractions using 1/2 as a benchmark.

Math Facts. Remind students to take home their Triangle Flash Cards to study the division facts for the 9s.
