TIMS Task

This DPP item provides practice with the multiplication facts for the square and 10s.

  1. $4.90; 7 × 70¢ = 490 or $4.90.
  2. $7.50; $2 × 3 = $6 and 50¢ × 3 = $1.50, $6 + $1.50 = $7.50.
  3. About $3.60; See below.
  4. $0.30; 90¢ ÷ 3 = 30¢

These problems can be solved using mental math strategies and multiplication facts. Ask students to share their strategies. Discuss with students that Question 3 calls for an estimate. An efficient strategy is to round 59¢ to 60¢ and multiply by 6. An inefficient strategy is to multiply 59 by 3 to get an exact answer.

V. Grocery Shopping

Show or tell how you solve each problem.

  1. Paper towels cost 70¢ a roll. How much will 7 rolls cost?
  2. Turkey sandwiches cost $2.50. How much will 3 sandwiches cost?
  3. Frozen yogurt cups cost 59¢ each. About how much will 6 cups cost?
  4. A juice pack has 3 juice boxes. A juice pack costs $0.90. How much is each juice box worth?
