Developing the Lesson

Part 1. Introducing the Mosaic Puzzle

Have students cut out the pieces on the Mosaic Puzzle page in the Student Activity Book. Ask students to store the pieces in an envelope as they will be used several times in this lesson. Explain that a mosaic is a design made up of smaller pieces.

  • Look at the 7 shapes. How are shapes 1, 2, 5, and 6 similar? (They all have 3 sides and 3 angles. They are all triangles.)
  • How are shapes 3, 4, and 7 similar? (They all have 4 sides and 4 angles. They are all quadrilaterals.)
  • Which shapes have at least one right angle? (Shapes 3, 5, and 6 all have at least one right angle.)
  • Which shapes have at least one pair of parallel lines? (Shapes 3, 4, and 7)
