Mathematical Standards

4.MD.C
Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles. (4.MD.C.5)
4.G.A
Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles. (4.G.A.2)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.

Angles are modeled as the turning of a ray from a starting position to an ending position. Degree measure is introduced as a way to show the size of an angle.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing angles as turning.
  • Identifying benchmark angles of 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°, and 360° [E11].
  • Identifying reflex angles.
  • Identifying attributes of an angle, including vertex point, rays, and angle size [E3].

Unit 9 Assessment Record

Materials Preparation

Angle Circles. Make copies of the Angle Circles Master in the Teacher Guide on colored paper and cut out the circles. Each student will need two circles of contrasting colors. In this activity, the contrasting colors are referred to as green and white. You may wish to cut out these circles before class, or have a student help.

Geometry Word Chart. Prepare to add one or two additional sheets of chart paper to the Geometry Word Chart started in Lesson 1. Students will need space to draw and label representations of the geometric terms introduced in this lesson (see Before the Lesson). Students will also need to reference the terms added to the Geometry Word Chart created in Lessons 1 and 2.
