Lesson 11

Workshop: Shapes and Properties

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2
X

Mathematical Standards

4.G.A
Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles. (4.G.A.2, 4.G.A.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students further develop their abilities to describe, analyze, and classify two-dimensional shapes by choosing targeted practice from a menu. Students also practice identifying congruent shapes, slides, flips, and turns of shapes. The story “Journey to Flatopia” provides a context for exploring two-dimensional shapes.

Content in this Lesson

  • Describing and analyzing 2-dimensional shapes based on their properties (e.g., number and length of sides, number and size of angles, relationships between sides) [E5].
  • Classifying 2-dimensional shapes using their properties [E6].
  • Identifying line (reflective) symmetry [E7].
  • Identifying congruent shapes [E8].
  • Identifying slides, flips, and turns of shapes [E9].
  • Justifying conclusions using geometric properties [E10].
