Lesson 7

Symmetry

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

Give each student some construction paper and a straightedge.

  • Draw a shape that has line symmetry and a shape that does not have line symmetry. (When folded on the lines of symmetry, the parts of the shape should match exactly.)

Have students cut these out and identify the lines of symmetry. Have students post their examples on the respective Geometry Word charts you prepared before the lesson.

If students seem confident with turn (rotational) symmetry, ask them to choose one shape from the chart that they think has turn symmetry. Ask students to verify whether the shape has turn symmetry by copying the shape on the chart and using the “box” strategy. Circle a few shapes that have turn symmetry.

Students can complete the Finding Symmetry page in the Student Activity Book as an assessment or for homework.

Use Question 1 on the Finding Symmetry page in the Student Activity Book to assess students' progress toward identifying line (reflective) symmetry [E7].

Targeted practice for this Expectation is in Lesson 11.
